Another great Physics* talk, this time with Namiko Mitarai from the NBI Biocomplexity section! There will be snacks as always! The lecture will be in English.
Abstract: When Space and Luck Decide Who Survives: Bacteria, Viruses, and Rare Events
What stops a virus from wiping out all its hosts? The answer may lie in rare accidents and the geometry of space. Using physics tools, we explore systems where spatial structure and stochastic events determine the fate of populations of bacteria attacked by virus. They suggest that unlikely, spatially-localized events can be the dominant force shaping ecological outcomes.
