Using Happenings with assistive technology
Happenings is a student's ticket, membership card and calendar, so it has to work whatever you use to read a screen. Below is what the iPhone app supports, what it does not, and how to tell us when something is in your way.
What the app supports
We declare these on the App Store. That means the everyday tasks work with the feature turned on: signing in, finding an event, buying a ticket, showing it at the door, joining a page, and changing your settings.
VoiceOver
Every button carries a name, images that mean something are described, and cards are read as one item instead of a handful of fragments. Your ticket QR code, membership code and stamp card are announced and printed as text, so the code is reachable without seeing it. In chat, replying and opening the message menu are listed actions rather than a swipe and a long press.
Voice Control
Everything you can tap has a name you can say. Actions that used to exist only as a gesture, like holding to record a voice message or swiping a message to reply, are now real commands as well.
Larger text
Text uses the system text styles, so it follows your size all the way to the largest accessibility sizes. Buttons and rows grow with it rather than clipping the words, including the one you press to pay.
Dark interface
The whole app is built in both light and dark, and follows your device. You can also pin it to one or the other in the app's settings.
Differentiate without colour alone
Where colour carries meaning it is never alone. A bar that is open now also carries a mark, a sold-out ticket says sold out, and a verified page keeps its seal.
Sufficient contrast
Text and controls meet the WCAG AA contrast ratios against the surfaces they sit on, in both light and dark. Text over a photo sits on a scrim so it stays readable whatever the picture is.
Reduced motion
With Reduce Motion on, the moving parts stop: the loading shimmer, the drifting bubbles behind the sign-in screen, the animation behind your wallet cards, and video that would otherwise play by itself.
What we do not claim
We would rather tell you than let you find out.
Captions
We do not declare captions. The app ships no video or audio of its own, and video uploaded by an organiser arrives without a caption track, so we cannot promise captions on it. Voice messages in chat are an exception: they are transcribed automatically and the transcript is shown with the message.
Audio descriptions
We do not declare audio descriptions, for the same reason. There is no video of ours to describe.
Where it is still rough
Photos, posters and videos are uploaded by the organisers who run pages, and most carry no description, so VoiceOver can announce that an image is there but not what it shows. A few older screens still read out as separate pieces rather than as one card. We fix these as we meet them, and a report from you moves one to the top of the list.
